Call Home (The Fifth Commandment)
The fifth commandment of the Aseres Hadibros says, “Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord they God giveth thee” (Exodus 20:12). This commandment is as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago. We should always honor our parents and show them respect, regardless of their age or feelings.
Honoring your parents means more than saying “please” and “thank you.” It includes being aware of their needs and offering help whenever possible. It also involves listening to them and taking their advice seriously. Respect for our parents can help us grow into responsible adults with a strong sense of morality.
Honoring our parents can also bring us closer to God. When we respect our parents, we respect the one who created them — namely, God himself. We should always strive to be an excellent example for others and honor our parents as part of that effort. This is a way of recognizing their importance in our lives and thanking God for everything they have done for us and given us.
