Parshas Noach: Noach Against The Tide

A world soaked in deceit, a flood that resets history, a tower that scrapes the sky—all before Abraham even arrives. We walk straight into the heart of those early chapters and uncover a surprising throughline: resistance is the engine of spiritual growth. Noah’s quiet defiance in a corrupt age becomes a template, not for perfection, but for courage under pressure. And when God warns Cain that “sin crouches at the door,” the final word is not fear—it’s possibility: “you can master it.”

I share a story about a student ditching class to watch soccer and why that simple game unlocked a deeper truth. Victory only matters when there are defenders on the field. The Yetzer Hara—the inner pull toward shortcuts and self—earns its “very good” not because harm is good, but because opposition turns choice into achievement. Without friction, there’s no faith. Without a goalie, there’s no goal worth cheering.

Across this conversation, we reframe failure, distraction, and delay as training grounds. Prayer counts most when your mind won’t settle. Study grows when fatigue whispers quit. Integrity shines when no one is watching. Instead of waiting for perfect conditions, we build small, sturdy habits that hold under stress and treat setbacks as practice, not verdicts. You’ll leave with a mindset you can use today: find the doorway where you often fall, plant your feet, and take one honest step forward—even when you don’t feel like it.

WEBVTT

00:00:00.320 --> 00:00:09.439
From the very beginning until its very end, our Parsha is riddled and infested with sin and sinners.

00:00:10.560 --> 00:00:19.839
All except for one man on planet Earth, that is, that found favor in the eyes of Hashem, and his name was Noah, and he saved mankind.

00:00:20.960 --> 00:00:22.719
He saved humanity.

00:00:23.199 --> 00:00:24.640
Along with his family.

00:00:24.879 --> 00:00:49.359
If it wasn't for Noah and his finding favor in the eyes of Hashem and building a Teva and Ark to save his family, there may be no continuing human life forms after that generation.

00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:53.439
Because Noah's generation earned an annihilation decree.

00:00:54.000 --> 00:01:04.239
The Tira tells us, Kates Kolbassar, the land was filled with deceit.

00:01:04.719 --> 00:01:20.480
And so God told Noah, the prophet, that I'm going to bring a mobile, a torrent, a deluge, a deluge onto the earth and wipe it all out.

00:01:20.640 --> 00:01:24.000
It needs a good power washing.

00:01:24.319 --> 00:01:31.120
It needs a good dishwasher power cycle to clean the earth of its sin.

00:01:34.319 --> 00:01:40.159
Sin really is not just the topic of conversation in Parshas Noach.

00:01:41.439 --> 00:02:04.480
Although it is very much part of Parshas Noach, because not only is the land filled with sin and sinners the during the chapter as the lead up to the Mabul, but even afterwards, right away, we hear about the building of Migdal Bovel, a bunch of humans that come together to sin.

00:02:05.280 --> 00:02:15.840
And once again, things go downhill until we meet Avramavinu, but sin is a very pressing and in your face type of theme.

00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:32.000
And it's not just in Parsha's Noach that we become aware of the power and of the fallout and the poisonousness of sin.

00:02:32.639 --> 00:02:42.319
But from the very beginning of time, all of Parsha's Baratish, too, if you picked up on it, is riddled and infested with sin.

00:02:43.439 --> 00:02:57.280
The very first person and his wife, sin, when Chava was seduced into eating from the tree of life that God told Adam and Chava not to eat from.

00:02:58.319 --> 00:03:05.680
A sin happened when the forbidden fruit slipped down their pure esophaguses.

00:03:07.280 --> 00:03:20.240
Sin happens when Adam and Chava give birth to sons, and one murders his brother out of jealousy.

00:03:20.800 --> 00:03:22.800
That's sin again, we see.

00:03:23.199 --> 00:03:30.800
Humankind, long before there's a Jewish nation, just humans can't get out of their own way.

00:03:32.080 --> 00:03:48.400
From Herek Aleph until Herek Yud Aleph, the 11th chapter, which is at the end of Parshas Noach, just keep a note of how many sins you come across in the Torah.

00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:57.199
There is Adam Khava, there is Khain in Hevel, there is the people of Noach's generation.

00:03:57.360 --> 00:04:05.199
Oh, we forgot to talk about Nimrod and how he made the people rebel against God after Noah lived.

00:04:06.800 --> 00:04:09.919
What about all the people that aren't named?

00:04:10.080 --> 00:04:16.560
When the Rambam counts how many people before Avramavinu believed in God, it's only about three or four or five.

00:04:16.639 --> 00:04:22.720
It's Enosh, it's Meshushelach, it's Noah, it's Shame, it's Aviar, that's it.

00:04:22.800 --> 00:04:25.439
It's five people, and everyone else is a sinner.

00:04:27.120 --> 00:04:31.120
There is no beginning of the Torah on a positive note.

00:04:34.480 --> 00:04:37.040
They do all types of sins.

00:04:37.600 --> 00:04:40.079
There are many types of sins that you know about.

00:04:40.800 --> 00:04:42.720
Different severities of sin.

00:04:44.480 --> 00:04:45.680
You could do a kate.

00:04:46.800 --> 00:04:50.160
We see the word avon.

00:04:50.879 --> 00:04:51.600
Iniquity.

00:04:51.759 --> 00:04:57.600
We see others doing trespassing, rebelliousness type of sins.

00:04:57.759 --> 00:04:59.120
We see risus.

00:04:59.680 --> 00:05:00.720
We see hummus.

00:05:01.199 --> 00:05:02.639
We see deceit.

00:05:04.560 --> 00:05:09.680
The sins are everywhere.

00:05:11.680 --> 00:05:13.839
Aggressive, rebellious sins.

00:05:14.560 --> 00:05:16.319
They're rampant and poisonous.

00:05:16.480 --> 00:05:25.279
It even seems like an addiction to the point that God testifies that the thoughts of the humans are rock rock col Hayom.

00:05:25.360 --> 00:05:28.000
They are nothing but evil all of the days.

00:05:28.240 --> 00:05:30.000
Could you imagine something like that?

00:05:30.319 --> 00:05:37.680
Even you and I, who may have, God forbid, some sins on our account.

00:05:38.560 --> 00:05:47.920
But I hope that you are in my company and normal people's company, that you're not always obsessing about sin.

00:05:49.439 --> 00:05:59.839
Maybe, God forbid, a sinful thought enters into our minds, but there are times that I'm thinking about my children or about business, or maybe even about Torah or Mitzvos.

00:06:00.800 --> 00:06:08.000
It may only be momentarily momentarily, but God testified about the previous and very beginning nations of the world.

00:06:10.319 --> 00:06:12.879
Nothing but evil and deceitful thoughts.

00:06:13.439 --> 00:06:33.040
And to cap off our little introduction here about the disastrousness and the very prevalentness of sin in the Torah and at the beginning of the Torah is just witness the fallout from sin.

00:06:33.759 --> 00:06:35.600
Its after effects.

00:06:36.399 --> 00:06:38.639
It is sin that brought death to the world.

00:06:38.800 --> 00:06:48.720
Before sin, before saying no to God or rebelling against God, Adam and Chava were to live forever.

00:06:49.120 --> 00:07:00.399
All of their spiritual and physical bodies in perfect unison, playing in harmony, and there would be no death that would befall them until sin happened.

00:07:00.639 --> 00:07:12.000
Sin is what brought death and evil and consequences and sickness and mortality to the world.

00:07:12.319 --> 00:07:25.519
To make matters worse, sin waits in ambush for us to fall prey to his traps.

00:07:34.800 --> 00:07:38.160
And all of its negative consequences.

00:07:38.399 --> 00:07:42.879
Hashem says to Cayenne after he murders his brother, why are you upset?

00:07:42.959 --> 00:07:44.319
Why are you distraught?

00:07:44.480 --> 00:07:46.800
If you improve, things will get better.

00:07:47.040 --> 00:07:52.720
If you repent and move on and do good, you will be forgiven and all will be well.

00:07:52.879 --> 00:07:55.839
You gotta look to the future and not dwell.

00:07:56.480 --> 00:08:08.959
But if you don't, but if you don't, you don't improve and you don't move on, but instead you dwell and continue to sin.

00:08:15.360 --> 00:08:18.160
Crouches at the opening.

00:08:18.399 --> 00:08:23.600
The elecha to shukaso and its urge is towards you.

00:08:25.360 --> 00:08:28.000
Its urge is towards you, we learn.

00:08:29.519 --> 00:08:38.720
It's pushing you, it's coaxing you, it's cajoling you, seducing you in to this poisonous action.

00:08:39.919 --> 00:08:43.519
How frightening, how frightening our reality is.

00:08:46.480 --> 00:08:59.039
But the PUSIC finishes with what I want today's podcast to be about, which is a different approach to the severity and accessibility of sin.

00:08:59.840 --> 00:09:07.519
That PUSIC finishes when God gives his final words towards the sinner.

00:09:11.360 --> 00:09:13.279
But you can master it.

00:09:15.200 --> 00:09:16.480
You can beat it.

00:09:17.120 --> 00:09:18.320
You can win.

00:09:19.519 --> 00:09:23.519
You can succeed against all odds.

00:09:25.440 --> 00:09:32.080
A relationship to sin shouldn't be one of fright and tension.

00:09:32.639 --> 00:09:37.360
Well, maybe a little bit of each of those wouldn't hurt.

00:09:38.799 --> 00:09:42.159
But Akadajbaraku himself testifies something interesting.

00:09:42.240 --> 00:09:57.600
Is the last posik in the first or the last posak of Parshas Boratius, in which God says, Behold, on the sixth day, God saw that it was done, and it was Vihene.

00:09:57.919 --> 00:10:02.399
Tovma owed it was very good, says Medrish Rabbah 9 7.

00:10:02.639 --> 00:10:10.639
Ravidnachman said in the name of Rabshmu'el, Behold, it is good, refers to the creation.

00:10:10.879 --> 00:10:12.720
What is exceedingly good?

00:10:13.440 --> 00:10:16.879
The creation of the Yetzer Hara happened.

00:10:17.120 --> 00:10:20.799
The evil inclination is what it means.

00:10:22.320 --> 00:10:25.919
And behold, it was perfect.

00:10:26.159 --> 00:10:28.000
Behold, it was exceedingly good.

00:10:28.159 --> 00:10:29.360
How could this be?

00:10:29.519 --> 00:10:40.559
After all that we've spoken here in these 10 minutes about the severity of sin, how could the urge to sin be possibly not only good, but exceedingly tovma-de?

00:10:40.960 --> 00:10:44.960
But friends, that's just it, and that's the name of the game.

00:10:47.519 --> 00:11:04.240
The urge to sin is exceedingly good because it is the defender, it is the obstacle to becoming a God-fearing Jew.

00:11:04.799 --> 00:11:14.080
And without the struggles, without the urge to sin, there would be no success and there would be no Hatzlacha.

00:11:14.639 --> 00:11:23.840
If there was no urge to sin, but instead everybody was pre-wired to do God's will, there would be no feat.

00:11:25.360 --> 00:12:03.279
In becoming Noah, in a generation of sinners, our whole existence is predicated upon the urge to sin and us mastering it and curtailing our licentiousness and becoming disciplined, God-fearing Jews in the face of the Yetzahara, in the face of all defenders, and in the face of a nation and a world infested with disgusting actions.

00:12:15.360 --> 00:12:32.159
And in explaining of this concept and why a relationship to sin should be one of optimism and one of gratitude.

00:12:34.480 --> 00:12:39.440
The great Jerusalem preacher, the Magadrev Sholem Swadron.

00:12:40.399 --> 00:12:53.440
He explained that he once had a student, a young Israeli boy, who got along well with his friends, enjoyed Torah study, was a good kid.

00:12:54.399 --> 00:12:57.200
But one day he missed school, he missed Khaeder.

00:12:59.759 --> 00:13:06.559
The next day, the Rebbe asked him, Where were you yesterday?

00:13:07.039 --> 00:13:14.240
And the boy shrugged it off and said, Uh, I was busy, but Rebbe won't understand.

00:13:16.720 --> 00:13:22.879
The boy didn't want to be pressed any further about his whereabouts and left.

00:13:24.000 --> 00:13:30.000
Before it was followed with the next day's absence as well.

00:13:30.320 --> 00:13:38.720
This good young and striving and striding student played hooky two days in a row.

00:13:39.279 --> 00:13:40.080
Where was he?

00:13:40.240 --> 00:13:41.679
What was he doing?

00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:47.759
Rab Shalom Swadron called him and said, My dear boy, my student.

00:13:50.639 --> 00:13:51.600
What's going on?

00:13:51.759 --> 00:13:53.200
Is everything okay?

00:13:53.919 --> 00:13:56.159
He said, Rebbe, you just won't get it.

00:13:56.480 --> 00:13:57.679
I would tell you.

00:13:57.919 --> 00:13:59.200
But you'd laugh.

00:14:00.480 --> 00:14:03.200
Rab Shalom Swadron said, try me.

00:14:04.639 --> 00:14:06.559
What's going on, please?

00:14:07.120 --> 00:14:11.120
He said, Well, I'm a big soccer fan.

00:14:11.360 --> 00:14:16.879
And the Maccabi Israeli soccer team, they're in the playoffs.

00:14:17.120 --> 00:14:20.399
They had their big match and they won two days ago.

00:14:20.480 --> 00:14:22.559
And they advanced to the next round.

00:14:22.799 --> 00:14:24.639
And they had another game.

00:14:24.960 --> 00:14:26.799
And they also won.

00:14:27.440 --> 00:14:29.200
And I'm really engaged.

00:14:29.279 --> 00:14:32.159
And I love the sport and I cheer and I watch.

00:14:32.320 --> 00:14:34.159
And I hate to tell you, Rebbe.

00:14:35.440 --> 00:14:37.519
But they made it to the championship.

00:14:37.759 --> 00:14:41.039
So I won't be here tomorrow either.

00:14:42.720 --> 00:14:46.480
I remember Stroll and Stradron said, well, okay.

00:14:47.600 --> 00:14:53.840
Can you kind of fill me in as to what soccer is and why you love it so much?

00:14:55.600 --> 00:15:01.840
He said, Well, okay, it's basically a sport where you kick a ball into the net.

00:15:02.480 --> 00:15:03.679
And it's really fun.

00:15:03.840 --> 00:15:05.440
And you run up and down the field.

00:15:05.679 --> 00:15:19.519
So Rabbi Shalom S Rajron said, if you have to watch a team kick a ball into the net, well, why don't you see if maybe there's a different time that the team could put the ball into the net?

00:15:21.759 --> 00:15:24.080
He said, Rebbe, no, that's that's not how it works.

00:15:24.159 --> 00:15:25.919
It's a scheduled game.

00:15:26.799 --> 00:15:35.840
Well, then he said, well, maybe if that's the time that it works, why don't they just quickly put the ball in?

00:15:36.639 --> 00:15:37.919
And then move on.

00:15:38.159 --> 00:15:39.919
He said, Rebbe, Rebbe.

00:15:40.960 --> 00:15:44.559
There's another team that's trying to stop them from putting the ball in.

00:15:44.720 --> 00:15:46.559
It's 11 against 11.

00:15:46.720 --> 00:15:48.879
And there's 10 defenders in a goalie.

00:15:49.039 --> 00:15:53.840
He could even use his hands to prevent you from putting the ball in the net.

00:15:53.919 --> 00:16:05.279
And the kunz is to be able to prevail and win be Minatseach and score in the face of the defenders.

00:16:05.519 --> 00:16:07.679
That's victory.

00:16:08.159 --> 00:16:11.440
And Ribshalom said, ah, I understand.

00:16:12.399 --> 00:16:14.399
It's only worth something.

00:16:15.279 --> 00:16:19.919
If there's someone or something that's stopping you.

00:16:20.399 --> 00:16:23.919
And he said to the boy, Do you understand?

00:16:24.480 --> 00:16:33.919
It wouldn't be exciting if you would come to Yeshiva every day and there was no impediments.

00:16:34.159 --> 00:16:37.840
There was no urge against it impacting you.

00:16:38.960 --> 00:16:41.360
The whole kunst, the whole feat.

00:16:43.200 --> 00:16:55.600
It all means something that you come to Yeshiva, that you come to school when you don't want to, when there's something blocking you, and there's a defender and there are goalies in your way.

00:16:57.120 --> 00:17:03.679
The way the story goes is the boy came to Yeshiva the next morning and was so encouraged, and he was happy to be there.

00:17:04.160 --> 00:17:07.359
Because now his whole mindset was changed.

00:17:07.599 --> 00:17:08.480
That I'm here.

00:17:08.640 --> 00:17:14.720
And he was the first one there, they say, because he understood what the struggle was and what the reward was.

00:17:15.440 --> 00:17:17.920
The Yetzahara is our defenders.

00:17:20.240 --> 00:17:26.799
Missing school to watch the game and the urge to not do God's will because of laziness.

00:17:27.039 --> 00:17:28.720
Those are the defenders.

00:17:29.599 --> 00:17:35.519
But we have such gratitude to that urge because if not for it, there'd be no mitzvah.

00:17:35.680 --> 00:17:43.440
There would be no mitzvah if there was no Yetzer Hara and no urge to sin.

00:17:44.799 --> 00:17:50.160
There would be no Noah if there would be no Malaharat Chamas.

00:17:51.519 --> 00:17:53.680
There would be no tefilah.

00:17:54.000 --> 00:17:58.880
If there were no distractions, there would be no self-discipline.

00:18:00.240 --> 00:18:05.519
If there weren't endless ways to indulge.

00:18:16.960 --> 00:18:23.599
Trying to seduce you to eat from the eight hadas that God said not to eat from.

00:18:24.160 --> 00:18:50.880
But the whole kunst to be a Jew is to be able to be Noah, to be the one shall bo that walks right past the crouching and ready to pounce urges and temptations and sins, but is in total control and has mastery over his actions.

00:18:56.960 --> 00:19:02.240
This is a crucial mindset that a Jew needs to have in his growth.

00:19:02.559 --> 00:19:14.160
Because you will be assaulted with trials and setbacks and seductions and temptations and so many things that will try to derail you from your success.

00:19:15.759 --> 00:19:18.480
The eighth Sahara lies in ambush.

00:19:19.200 --> 00:19:25.519
There have been so many setbacks in the past week or two.

00:19:26.240 --> 00:19:29.920
Things that I really hoped would not happen that happened.

00:19:31.119 --> 00:19:34.880
And it gets in the way of the yeshiva's man starting.

00:19:35.440 --> 00:19:40.880
The morning is a time for Schodesh Khezvan to get back to the winter's man.

00:19:41.200 --> 00:19:43.039
But a couple things have gotten in the way.

00:19:43.119 --> 00:19:46.720
And I thought to myself, man, I wish these things didn't happen.

00:19:46.880 --> 00:19:48.960
I wish they wouldn't be on my mind.

00:19:49.920 --> 00:19:55.119
But in truth, that's the whole kunz.

00:19:55.759 --> 00:20:17.279
To be able to steig, to be able to still focus in prayer or in learning or in anyone's godly pursuits, to be able to do it while Sin crouches and while the setbacks and struggles are happening, while there are 10 defenders in a goalie trying to prevent you from scoring, that's the feat.

00:20:17.440 --> 00:20:19.200
That's the whole kunz.

00:20:21.039 --> 00:20:36.880
To walk the divine path when you are upset, to pray with concentration when you are scatterbrained, when you are saddened to somehow find faith.

00:20:37.440 --> 00:20:39.519
That's the kunz of Judaism.

00:20:39.920 --> 00:20:56.160
That's what it means to find favor in the eyes of God, that no matter what surrounds you or how many defenders there are, you can come to Yeshiva and come to school when you have the utmost distraction on your plate.

00:20:57.599 --> 00:21:02.799
This is what empowered me to rise and grind for the winters, man.

00:21:03.839 --> 00:21:11.359
This is what is what I hope will empower you and should change your relationship with your Yaitsahara.

00:21:12.160 --> 00:21:25.279
That when those urges and those feelings and those disgusting emotions, things that you wish you didn't have to do or feel, they start coming your way.

00:21:27.519 --> 00:21:32.480
You should recognize that now is when life begins.

00:21:33.119 --> 00:21:37.119
Now is when I have a chance to find favor in the eyes of Hashem.

00:21:37.519 --> 00:21:39.599
Now is when I have a chance to become a Noah.

00:21:40.400 --> 00:21:45.279
When the whole world is filled with chamas, that's when Avrahams and Noahs are born.

00:21:47.119 --> 00:21:49.039
When I don't feel like it.

00:21:50.559 --> 00:21:51.920
That's the kunst.

00:21:54.480 --> 00:22:10.960
So while it is true that sin is prevalent, that there are many different types of sins, and that from the beginning of time mankind has tragically fell to sin.

00:22:12.240 --> 00:22:16.640
It even seems like it's gotten to a point that some are addicted to sin.

00:22:18.240 --> 00:22:21.119
That shouldn't be depressing.

00:22:21.839 --> 00:22:24.559
You should welcome that as an opportunity.

00:22:25.279 --> 00:22:28.160
And you should wait for the times that you don't feel like it.

00:22:28.319 --> 00:22:33.200
And you should wait eagerly for the times that it isn't easy, because that's when life begins.

00:22:33.440 --> 00:22:42.160
You should wait eagerly until the Yetzahara kicks in and he's ready to pounce, and boom, you can Tim Shalbaugh, you can master it.

00:22:42.559 --> 00:22:43.920
You can improve.

00:22:44.240 --> 00:22:47.920
And your past can be forgotten.

00:22:48.400 --> 00:22:50.480
And your future can be pure.

00:22:53.440 --> 00:23:03.440
To walk the divine path through the defenders to find favor in the eyes of Hashem.

00:23:04.960 --> 00:23:19.839
Because those impediments, the crouching Satan and his readiness to pounce, and his urges that he creates for us towards evil, that's what makes the game fun.

00:23:20.000 --> 00:23:22.559
That's what makes the game worth playing.

00:23:22.720 --> 00:23:31.039
And that's what makes scoring a goal and winning the game actually worth it.

00:23:33.200 --> 00:23:35.279
It is when we are not in the mood.

00:23:36.319 --> 00:23:41.599
When we have struggles, when we have urges to sin, but we transcend.

00:23:43.359 --> 00:23:47.519
The Yatsahara Hinaitov Ma od He's exceedingly good.

00:23:49.119 --> 00:23:56.559
Because he is the one that makes life life and makes the game worth playing.
