Blessed are You, Hashem, Who gives the rooster understanding to distinguish between day and night. (14)

Blessed are You, Hashem our God, King of the Universe, Who gives the rooster understanding to distinguish between day and night.

The significance of a rooster's ability to distinguish night from day goes beyond simply knowing if it's night or day, as many animals do.

What makes the rooster special is its ability to sense the approaching sunrise before it becomes visibly light.

Rabbi Meilich Biderman suggests that we can draw a parallel between the rooster's behavior and our lives. Just as the rooster anticipates the light even in the darkness of night, we, too, can learn to see the "light at the end of the tunnel" during our darkest moments.
